10 top pubs you've got to visit in Devon

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

(Most pubs are situated near to or in Exeter)*

1. The Agricultural Inn (formerly known as 'The Lazy Toad')

Opening times: 12:00-23:00 Tuesday-Saturday, 12:00-22:30 Sunday, closed Monday.

The Agricultural Inn has to be one of my favourite places to eat, especially on a Sunday afternoon. The Agricultural Inn is set in the the beautiful village of Brampford Speke. There is an small outdoor area just in front of the pub where you can enjoy a drink outside, there is even a sheltered bus stop area in case the weather changes, which in the UK should be no surprise.

The portion size of the roast dinner is perfect and I recommend getting the truffle cauliflower cheese as an extra add on!

2. The Globe Inn Chagford

Opening times: 12:00-15:30, 18:00-23:00 Monday-Saturday, 12:00-15:30, 18:00-22:00 Sunday.

Imagine going for a walk around Dartmoor on a rainy day and then being greeted by a roaring fire, cosy atmosphere and a roast dinner. Well, this is the perfect pub for this.

If you're in search for a sunday roast, then this the perfect place to rest after a long Sunday walk. The staff were super accommodating as well, whilst most of my friends order a sweet treat at the end, one of my friend wanted an additional single Yorkshire pudding on its own with some gravy (which they were able to provide)!

I'd recommend making an advanced booking for this place as it is so popular and you don't want to be disappointed by being turned away.

3. The Rugglestone Inn- Widecome in the Moor

Opening times: 11:30-15:00, 17:00 until late.

The Rugglestone Inn is one of my favourite pubs in Dartmoor National Park. The pub looks like a fairy tale cottage with wisteria growing up the stone wall. However, one of the main reasons why this is one of my favourite places is because it has roaming chickens in the outside garden. If you're looking to sit outside, why not try the outdoor heated bus shelter?

Even during the colder months, you can sit outside in the bus stop style seating area, which has a heater you can sit right underneath. I'd recommend the Camembert as well, even if you're stopping for a light snack.

If you wanting to explore more of the moor, then the Rugglestone Inn even offers accommodation in the Rugglestone Cottage just next to the pub itself!

4. Turf Hotel - Exeter

Opening times: 10:00-20:00 (ish)

The Turf Hotel is the perfect place for a cycle along the quayside with a stop off for a drink and light bite to eat. This pub looks directly over the Exe Esturary and is situated in an area of outstanding and protected natural beauty at the end of the historical Exeter Canal. There's plenty of outdoor seating, so you can watch the go down after a long day of work.

Even better, if you're looking for an evening away, you can either book to stay in a Yurt or Shepherds hut.

5. The Beer Engine

Opening times: Monday (closed), Tuesday-Sunday 15:00-22:00.

The Beer Engine is only located 15 minutes away from Exeter City Centre. This pub has a really cosy atmosphere with their owned brewed beers on tap. Newton St Clyst station is only located around the corner, so if you're wanting to taste more than one beer on tap, you're able to catch the local train back into Exeter.

The brie wedges here are delicious as is pretty much all of the food on the menu. Also, I'd highly recommend making a reservation when the Exeter Morris Dancers come for their dance battles.

6. Double Locks- Exeter

Opening times: 11:00-22:00

Double locks is a larger pub, but certainly a well loved one by Exeter.

Double locks tends to have many events happening throughout the year, from food festivals to outdoor cinemas.

If you're wanting to add some adventure to your visit to Double locks you could even paddle-board, Kayak or Canoe down, grab a quick bite to eat or drink and then head back down the river. Top tip: you can pick the wild blackberries which grow along the river.

7.Fisherman's Cot- Bickleigh

Opening times: 12:00-22:00

Sitting on the banks of the River Exe in Bickleigh sits The Fisherman's Cot. With beautiful countryside surrounding this pub, you can head for a lovely walk after you've had wonderful roast dinner on a Sunday. The Fisherman's Cot is your a typical devon pub set in a picturesque village.

8. Fingle Bridge Inn

Opening times: 11:00-15:30

Fingle Bridge Inn is sat on the banks of the River Teign. If you're looking for a relaxing spot to sit and have some food/drink after a long weekend walk, I'd highly recommend Fingle Bridge Inn.

Fingle Bridge Inn is also a wonderful start or finish to a walk along the Teign Gorge.

9. The Lighter Inn

Opening times: Monday (closed), Tues-Thurs 11:30-15:00, 17:30-22:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-23:00, Sunday 12:00-21:00.

The Lighter Inn is located in the historic Saxon town of Topsham. The pub sits near to the River Exe Estuary and is perfect for both indoor and outdoor dining. Extremely cosy in the winter and glorious in the summer.

The Lighter Inn has a lovely pub garden just situated outside which overlooks the estuary. A perfect setting if you're looking for some Al Fresco dining.

10. The Old Firehouse

Opening times: Monday-Wednesday 15:00-23:00, Thursday-Sunday 12:00-23:00.

Food service until 21:30

The Old Firehouse is a popular choice to eat in the city of Exeter. Not far from the high street sit an Old Firehouse converted into a popular eatery enjoyed by many locals.

The Old Firehouse does the best square pizzas which come in a basket. If you've not yet eaten a pizza from the firehouse, do not underestimate the size of them. I'd recommend sharing a pizza between two. You even have the option to select a half and half pizza, which is great if you can't decide on just one between two.

The Old Firehouse even does a weekly pub quiz on a Monday night, if you're looking to test out your general knowledge skills.
